Abstract:
Adenanthera pavonina Linn. is widely used in Indian system of medicine. The study had two objectives. First, to subject the root of A. pavonina to phytochemical analysis, identify the major flavonoid and isolate it. Phytochemical investigations showed Robinetin to be the predominant flavonoid in the root. This study is the first to isolate Robinetin from the roots of A. pavonina. The second objective was to assess the protective effects of Robinetin isolated from the roots of A. pavonina against peroxidative damage induced by Sodium perchlorate in Sprague-Dawley rats. Perchlorate ions induce oxidative stress by releasing oxygen free radicals. The levels of lipid peroxidation products (TBARS) decreased, while the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase showed significant elevation in Robinetin fed rats. The concentration of reduced glutathione also showed elevated values. Results confirm the potent protective effects of Robinetin in reducing the severity of peroxidative damage which can be attributed to its structural features.
