Abstract:
Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Ashwagandha) is an important medicinal plant of Indian traditional systems of medicine, Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani. Withanolides are the most important bioactive constituents in the roots of Ashwagandha which is cultivated in more than 4000 hectares, in India mainly in northwestern Malwa plateau of Madhya Pradesh and nearby Nagaur district of Rajasthan. The productivity and quality of roots vary with different propagation techniques and harvesting time. A field experiment was conducted at Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, India to find out the best propagation method and to study the influence of harvesting time on yield and quality of herb developed. The study revealed that method of direct seed sowing (broadcasting) was the best method of cultivation of Ashwagandha as the yield and quality of roots were better and more economical. Results also indicated that harvesting time had pronounced effect on productivity and morphology of roots.
